Platinum diselenide (PtSe$_{2}$) is a recently-discovered extrinsic magnet, with its magnetism attributed to the presence of Pt-vacancies. The host material these defects itself displays interesting structural and electronic properties, some which stem from an unusually strong interaction between layers. To date, it not clear how unique intrinsic properties PtSe$_2$ will affect induced magnetism. In this theoretical work, we show that defect-induced in PtSe$_{2}$ thin films highly sensitive to: (i) layer-thickness (ii) defect density, (iii) substrate choice. These different factors dramatically modify all magnetic including magnitude local moments, strength coupling, even nature coupling moments. We further inter-layer interactions are key understanding effects. A better various influences on magnetism, can enable controllable tuning Pt-based dichalcogenides, be used design novel devices for magnetoelectric magneto-optic applications.

We have investigated infinitely long, monostrand Pt nanowires theoretically, and found that they exhibit Hund’s rule magnetism. We find a spin moment of 0.6 μB per atom, at the equilibrium bond length. Its magnetic moment increases with stretching. The origin of the wire magnetism is analyzed and its effect on the conductance through the wire is discussed.
